Emily- Chapter 6 & 7

1)Why is it important to build a budget , even if art making isn't your main source of income?
The importance of building a budget helps you understand what you can afford and what you are making and how you can see what you need for your source of living. This also helps you plan out how much money you can spend on art materials and still be able to live comfortably

2) Based on your current semester spending, pretend you are spending another term here- build a budget for that semester?

Building materials- plexi glass, brackets, and heavy wire- $100

Ink- $5

Brushes- $20

3) What is the difference between opportunity costs and actual costs?

Actual cost is the sum of all the works and materials that add up over the fiscal year.  The opportunity costs is the money that is lost because of a rejection of a project or failing to sell works or generate income that was possible.

Alexis Richards - Chapters 8& 9

1. You are looking for some used furniture for an upcoming exhibition and find an ad-"Selling some chairs and stuff; price is non-negotiable." Would this ad fulfill the requirements of an appropriate offer? What would make this offer more appropriate?
No because it is not specific enough and its doesn't outline what condition they are and and why the price would be not negotiable.  The offer would be more appropriate if you stated the number of chairs, condition, and what other things are included in the word "stuff". Also including that asking price

2. Which do you think is the most important of the "common" clauses when creating a contract (e.g. "Whereas", Merger and Integration, Non-Waiver, etc.)? Why?
The merger and Integration clause seems to me to be the most important because it states how the job will be done and that nothing can be changed after signing.  This keeps the honest people honest so that what you said that you would do in the beginning cant be changed by either party.

3. When/why is it advisable to consult a lawyer about a contract?
Sometime the verbiage and use of wording could be confusing, they can probably put terms into an easier to understand context.  There is also the ability to consult the legal responsibilities you have in relation to the contract and the goods being produced or exchanged.

Chapter 10- Sarah
How would copyrights, trademarks and patents apply to you and your practices?
Copyrights would apply most to my practice because of the photography and other 2d mediums that I post online.  This would help me keep my artwork somewhat safe and also tweaking websites to have a non right click option would be something that I should use.

What is important to know about “art for hire” and its legal rights?
if you are hired to do a work it is not all yours, in fact it belongs to the person who is hiring you. There must be a contract in this sense or else the disputes may make their way into the court system. This must fall in to the section 101 of the law to see if it apply to the "for hire".

What is an advantage to using creative commons?
You can borrow works and give the artist the attribution.

Negotiations - Heather

1) In your practice, how do you think that you will benefit from social capital through negotiations?
the more people, the more profit. But also they would tell others about how I am as a business person and this could also help grow my client base. In turn bringing in more money.
2) What are the long-term benefits of participating in negotiations in your practice?
the use of negotiations will help me as a tattoo artist by finding common ground on work. This will not only help me with creating great work that fits my clients and their bodies well but making sure that they are happy with what they want as a tattoo.  Some clients will be easier to help guide then others but in the end, yes I want everyone to have the perfect tattoo, but it is their body and if it makes them happy and it is how they want it then that is a win.
3) During your art practice have you gone through a negotiation? If so, what facts did you know about yourself, the situation in question, the other party's information and the timing? What was the outcome?
yes, we have recently worked on a mural that was a group project. There were 21 ideas that started and as a group we chose the top image, but thorough compromise and understanding of the others talent and interest in the imagery.  We had to make a mural that was relevant to a community that we personally did not live in, and we had to make it so that our audience could see this painting and relate. This mural was probably the hardest thing because there were so many ideas and then the outside factors, but in the end it worked out well.

Kelli

1) my art has conversations with a photographer Brandon Stanton who is involved with the Humans of New York that has portraits that deal with peoples situations, clothing, and setting. My portraits have a dialog with his work because of the context clues my scenes give of the people. Keith Kuzara tattoo artist who is similar to my neo traditional. Tattoo galleries would be a place that I think would be a good place to show my work but also pop up galleries that have a not so uptight feel.

2) The majority of the people that are drawn to my work are those who can relate to tattoos but I also get an older more conservative generation that don't totally understand it, so they tend to ask questions and be intrigued because they want to know more about myself and why I make this work.

3)I think it is only appropriate to talk about your work at an opening if someone is REALLY interested, but besides that it isn't about you unless its your opening. Plus if they did ask id just give them a business card with my website for them to later look up.

Mariah

1. In what ways would you notice your brand being recognized?
Social media, the use of social media is the easiest way to use as a platform to show art and photos to a large amount of people.  Also A community is a something that would be a great way to be recognized by being involved with other local artists.

2. Why is it crucial for an artist to have a website?
This is the way that people have access to portfolios, the advantage of having a website is that clients can directly contact you.  It is also a great way to see a larger collection of work from an artist. Things on they website can be diverse and can show all your talents.

3. How can email be a beneficial form of communication and how is this type of communication different from interacting through other media outlets?

Email is a difficult form of communication because it is sometimes hard to convey everything that you are trying to explain or say in an email.  It is different then a phone call because you have the detached sense of connection because it is all electronically transmitted.
